While cornices can utilize minimal fabric, they are not always cost-effective, says designer Patricia Burns, L'Elegance du D??cor, Hattiesburg, MS. "The labor is so high on a cornice," she says. Burns used cornices to make windows appear 30 inches taller for one of her clients. She also wanted to give the room, featuring traditional furniture, a more modern touch. "I liked the idea of incorporating a structural element to it," she says. Using cornices enabled her to present a fresh look, while maintaining its functionality. "Cornices are definitely more sustainable than other treatments," says Gillian Wendel, The Wendel Works, Pinehurst, TX. They are easily cleaned, and "you can vacuum them," Wendel notes. She uses cornices in rooms that feature very clean lines, as they can accent the fabric. Wendel also used cornices for her pagoda window treatments, which were more expensive than the more classic-shaped cornice.
